four fairies
The pupils
For some time I've been fascinated and intrigued by the drawings and paintings of the Belgian artist Michael Borremans. A lot of the people that inhabit the austere unsettling worlds of his paintings seem to be from the 1940s. Your never quiet sure what their doing or what's going on. The characters remind me of models from old 1940's instruction manuals demonstrating old skills and techniques. His paintings are unsettling, mysterious and melancholic. Im really drawn to the surreal images which he beautifully creates.
A recent still life shot taken at my studio utilising some old props and bottles i'd been given from a house clearance. Tried to give the image an old fine art feel.
I recently rediscovered the painting David's farewell from Jonathan by Rembrandt. I'd completely forgotten what a beautifully atmospheric piece of art it is. Rembrandt has beautifully captured the high emotions of the parting of the two friends as told in the old testament story. When Rembrandt painted the
image in 1642 he had not long lost his own wife Saskia. So perhaps he was drawing on his own experiences to create such an emotional piece. The painting hangs in the state Hermitage museum in St Petersburg in Russia. Stunning !
